Gertraud Steppat / Prof. Fritz Steppat
Gertraud Steppat und Prof. Fritz Steppat lived in Cairo from 1955 till 1959. Fritz Steppat had been tasked with organizing the German language instruction in Cairo and establishing the Goethe-Institut there. Ulrike Freitag writes: “In cooperation with the German Embassy, he supported the Egyptian Ministry of Education first as a teacher and later as an inspector for German language instruction in Egyptian schools. His wife, Gertraud, was also hired as a German teacher. In doing so, President Nasser, who had come to power in 1954, pursued the goal of greater independence from Great Britain.” In her diary, Gertraud Steppat very briefly mentions a visit to the opening of an exhibition by Hassan Heshmat with her husband Fritz in 1959: “Bei der Eröffnung der Ausstellung von Porzellanfiguren, die der junge Ägypter Hassan Heshmat in Selb in Deutschland gemacht hat, mußte Fritz die deutsche Ansprache von Dr. Kramer arabisch vorlesen. (Eintrag vom 11. - 17. Januar 1959). In 1993, Prof. Fritz Steppat became the founding director of Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) in Berlin, which hosts this project. He bequeathed his extensive library and estate to ZMO, where we in 2026 found the diary entry from the couple’s time in Cairo.
